Suspended Moment V

Original digital-to-physical · Aluminum panel, UV ink, crystal glass pigments, high-gloss automotive clear coat

$10,300

The morning reading and the evening reading are different paintings. The morning reading is cooler, the blue register dominant, the surface reflective and open. By afternoon the warm coral tones advance and the piece reads as warmer, closer, more enclosed. By evening it holds both. It is not decorative in the way that word usually means. It is active. It pays attention to the room and the room pays attention back.

From the studio

The North Sea at The Hague in winter has a specific quality: the light comes in low and flat, and the horizon between water and sky loses its definition. Standing at the waterline, the distinction between what is above and what is below becomes a matter of color temperature rather than line. That perceptual condition, where two states occupy the same space, is what this series is built from. Suspended Moment V is an attempt to hold that interval still long enough to live with it.

Living with this work

The first week, the color range is what you notice. The second week, the way the surface catches peripheral light as you move through the room. After a month, you stop noticing and start feeling it, which is when the work is doing its real job. In morning light the work reads as energetic. By late afternoon it reads as contemplative. Both are accurate. The work contains both.

Where it lives

Room by room: where this work thrives, where it struggles, and exactly where to hang it.

Room fit

This work needs light that moves. A room with fixed overhead fluorescents will flatten it. A room with natural light that travels across the wall during the day will reveal it differently at 9am, noon, and 4pm. Neutral or white walls let the palette carry the room. Position it at 150 cm to the center of the work, which places the horizon line at eye level when seated, which is where it belongs.

Good fit

Morning light hitting the surface from the side will bring out the cooler blue register as you wake. Position it opposite or adjacent to the window so natural light crosses it rather than hitting it flat. At 145 cm to center it reads at comfortable height from a bed or low chair.

vonMoerenburgh

The Hague, The Netherlands

48,000 miles. Panama to New Zealand, Brazil to Hawaii. vonMoerenburgh was crossing the Pacific, then crossing it again, from a different angle. The ocean kept finding him. Eventually, he stopped leaving.

He came to art late. Thirty years in design, gaming, and publishing, then at 49, he started making art. The work is built on a digital foundation, finished by hand with crystal glass pigments that shift with the light. The same surface reads differently depending on where you stand and what the light is doing.

He always meant to go to art school. This is what happened instead.
