A sun over a flat horizon. The sky runs indigo to peach. Two pink forms float on the water and a pale structure cuts across the whole thing. You will read the forms as buoys, or stones, or islands. They are two people. A friend and me, on Maui, the evening the wind blew us off the rocks. Nobody but us would know that. The work keeps it exact for me and open for you. You keep looking for what the forms are. They do not settle. That is the point.

From the studio

“A friend and I found some rocks above the water and sat there. Almost evening. Big winds, big waves: the kind that make the rocks feel less solid than they are. The orange and the pink arrived fast. Then the wind picked up and literally blew us off the rocks. We went back to the tent. The two of us are still out there, on the water, in this one.”

Living with this work

The forms do not resolve, which means the work keeps its question across the years of living with it. From across the room it is a warm, graphic sunset with two shapes on the water. Up close the precision of the structure and the softness of the floating forms become apparent, and the question of what they are returns. The crystal glass pigments shift the warm sky registers as the room light changes through the day. The viewer keeps coming back to a work they have not finished reading.

The warm, clean palette and the intimate paper format suit a room used in the evenings, though the work holds in daylight too given how graphic the color field is. The magenta and peach registers advance under warm lamp light. The two floating forms and the diagonal structure read clearly at close viewing distance, 50 to 100 cm. 48,000 miles. Panama to New Zealand, Brazil to Hawaii. vonMoerenburgh was crossing the Pacific, then crossing it again, from a different angle. The ocean kept finding him. Eventually, he stopped leaving.

He came to art late. Thirty years in design, gaming, and publishing, then at 49, he started making art. The work is built on a digital foundation, finished by hand with crystal glass pigments that shift with the light. The same surface reads differently depending on where you stand and what the light is doing.

He always meant to go to art school. This is what happened instead.
