Suspended Moment VII

Original digital-to-physical · Aluminium panel, UV ink, crystal glass pigments, high-gloss automotive clear coat

$10,300

Noordwijk has a path through the dunes between the village and the beach. Everyone who lives there walks it. VII is one of those walks: a figure on the path, the sky going pink and yellow above, the deep blue sea past the dunes. The work is not about the sunset. It is about the going. On aluminium panel the crystal glass pigments hold the warm sky longer than the actual sky did.

From the studio

Noordwijk. The path between the village and the beach, through the dunes. I have walked it more times than I can count. One evening the sky was doing the pink-and-yellow thing it does in late summer, and someone was walking the path ahead of me, and that was the work. Not the sunset. The path. The going.

Living with this work

The work reads differently from the bed than from the doorway. From closer in, the figure is the subject and the path is the route. From across the room, the path is the subject and the figure is the proof that someone uses it. The crystal glass pigments shift the warm sky registers under different light. In the evening the pink and yellow come forward and the work holds the room in the same register as the actual evening outside the window.

Where it lives

Room by room: where this work thrives, where it struggles, and exactly where to hang it.

Room fit

At 123x123 cm this is a feature wall work. The figure and the path read clearly from two to four meters of viewing distance. The palette is warm and the work performs best in rooms with natural daylight or warm directional artificial light. Cool overhead lighting flattens the pink register. Position at 145 cm to center on a white or neutral wall.

Strong fit

At 123x123 cm the work anchors a bedroom wall completely. The warm palette settles the room rather than activating it. The figure on the path reads from bed at two to three meters. Morning light brings out the deep blue. Evening lamp light advances the pink and yellow.

vonMoerenburgh

The Hague, The Netherlands

48,000 miles. Panama to New Zealand, Brazil to Hawaii. vonMoerenburgh was crossing the Pacific, then crossing it again, from a different angle. The ocean kept finding him. Eventually, he stopped leaving.

He came to art late. Thirty years in design, gaming, and publishing, then at 49, he started making art. The work is built on a digital foundation, finished by hand with crystal glass pigments that shift with the light. The same surface reads differently depending on where you stand and what the light is doing.

He always meant to go to art school. This is what happened instead.
