A lone walk on the beach after everyone else has gone home. The last warmth still in the air. The pale Bahian sand turned lavender by the evening sky. This is the quietest work in the Endless Summer series: not the excitement of summer but the moment when you are standing in it, aware it will not last, trying to absorb as much as possible before it fades. The crystal glass pigments hold the sunset in the surface. In the evening the painted light and the room light find each other at the same hour.

“Bahia, Brazil. The pale sand and the shallow coastal water at the end of the day take on whatever colour the sky gives them: at this hour, lavender and cream from the pre-sunset light. The sun still on the horizon. The sea teal and calm. A figure standing in it, which was me, aware that this particular evening was the kind that stays. Not because anything happened. Because of the quality of the light and the scale of the silence and the specific feeling of not wanting to be anywhere else. Still here.”

Living with this work

The crystal glass pigments in the red-orange sunset register advance in warm lamp light in the evening. The lavender foreground deepens in morning light. The figure holds its position through both. Collectors who spend time in the room at the end of the day will have the defining version of this work: the painted sunset and the ambient light finding each other at the same hour. The horizontal composition means the work reads as a complete landscape from any position in the room, which is unusual among the aluminium works in this collection.

Room fit

The horizontal composition and the vast scale of the landscape make this a strong feature wall piece at any viewing distance. The five colour registers read clearly from across a room: the eye moves from the deep blue at the top through the red-orange horizon to the lavender foreground with no instruction required. Position at 145 cm to center on a white or neutral wall with at least two meters of clear viewing distance. Natural or warm directional artificial light preferred. The crystal glass pigments shift the sunset and foreground registers most noticeably in warm evening light, at the same hour the work was made from.

Strong fit

The evening reading, when the red-orange sunset register advances with the lamp light, makes this a strong bedroom piece. The horizontal composition reads completely from the bed. Position at 145 cm to center on a white or neutral wall. Morning light gives the cooler reading with the lavender foreground dominant and the sunset register quiet. Warm evening light gives the defining version.

48,000 miles. Panama to New Zealand, Brazil to Hawaii. vonMoerenburgh was crossing the Pacific, then crossing it again, from a different angle. The ocean kept finding him. Eventually, he stopped leaving.

He came to art late. Thirty years in design, gaming, and publishing, then at 49, he started making art. The work is built on a digital foundation, finished by hand with crystal glass pigments that shift with the light. The same surface reads differently depending on where you stand and what the light is doing.

He always meant to go to art school. This is what happened instead.
