Most people see the sky first. Then the figure. Then they wonder who Warren Lee is. The name comes from Shanghai: a man vonMoerenburgh used to see and never spoke to, who stood wherever he stood like the city had been built around him. The painting holds that quality. It belongs in a room where someone sits alone sometimes, not because it is melancholy but because it understands that quality of being present without needing to explain it.

“When I lived in Shanghai there was a guy I used to see. Cool, unhurried, always standing somewhere like he had decided that was exactly where he needed to be. Chinese, well-dressed, never seemed to be waiting for anything. Just present. I never spoke to him. I never found out his name. Warren Lee is the name I gave him.”

Living with this work

The figure becomes more familiar over time without becoming less mysterious. After weeks on the wall it reads less like an image and more like a presence in the room. Some mornings it reads as solitary, some evenings as self-possessed. The painting does not decide which. The viewer does.

Room by room: where this work thrives, where it struggles, and exactly where to hang it.

Room fit

The warm palette and the single figure read well in any room where someone occasionally sits still. A bedroom or reading room gives it the most intimate version of itself. A living room with clear viewing distance of two meters or more gives it the most open reading. Position at 145 cm to center. The gradient benefits from natural light during the day and warm artificial light in the evening.

Strong fit

The strongest domestic placement. The figure reads well from bed at resting distance and the warm palette is appropriate for a room used alone. Morning light brings out the blue; lamp light advances the warm register. The work does not demand attention but holds it when given.

48,000 miles. Panama to New Zealand, Brazil to Hawaii. vonMoerenburgh was crossing the Pacific, then crossing it again, from a different angle. The ocean kept finding him. Eventually, he stopped leaving.

He came to art late. Thirty years in design, gaming, and publishing, then at 49, he started making art. The work is built on a digital foundation, finished by hand with crystal glass pigments that shift with the light. The same surface reads differently depending on where you stand and what the light is doing.

He always meant to go to art school. This is what happened instead.
