Suspended Moment IX

Original on Hahnemühle paper · Hahnemühle fine art paper, crystal glass pigments, airbrush application

$1,300

A distilled memory of the sea rather than a literal seascape. The sun over the Maui coast is larger in this work than it was on the afternoon it came from, which is accurate: that is how it stayed. The violet and coral sky and the graphic white wave lines hold the feeling of the final surf of the day, long evenings at the coast, driving home with the sea still in your eyes. In the evening the palette comes forward and the memory and the room find each other.

From the studio

Maui. The north coast in the late afternoon, the surf running in toward the headlands. The sun was already too large for the sky it was sitting in, which is how it always seems at that latitude at that hour. The waves were graphic from above: white lines tracing arcs toward the shore, the water between them deep blue. Driving home after, the image stayed: not what it had looked like but a distilled version, more saturated, the sun larger, the waves reduced to their essential movement. IX is that version, not the coast but the memory of the coast, which is always the more vivid one.

Living with this work

At 40x40 cm the work reveals itself at a different distance from the dibond pieces. The wave-line tracery, the gradient transitions between violet and coral, and the crystal glass pigment depth in the surface are all visible at close range. In morning diffused light the blue register holds the composition cool and precise. In warm evening lamp light the violet and coral advance and the sun disc comes forward. The square format contains the memory tightly. The smaller the work the more completely it can be seen.

Where it lives

Room by room: where this work thrives, where it struggles, and exactly where to hang it.

Room fit

At 40x40 cm this is the most intimate work in the Suspended Moment series. It requires close viewing: the wave lines and the gradient detail read fully at 40 to 80 cm. Frame with UV-protective glass and position at 145 cm to center on a white or neutral wall. The square format and the small scale mean the work earns its place in spaces where it will be seen closely, not across a room. It rewards sustained attention at proximity more than any other work in the series.

Strong fit

The strongest placement for a 40x40 cm work. A bedroom where the piece will be seen at close range, from the bed or while dressing, gives the full detail of the wave lines and the gradient depth. Position at 145 cm to center on a white or neutral wall. Frame with UV-protective glass. The evening reading, when the violet and coral advance with the lamp light, is the most resonant version of this work.

vonMoerenburgh

The Hague, The Netherlands

48,000 miles. Panama to New Zealand, Brazil to Hawaii. vonMoerenburgh was crossing the Pacific, then crossing it again, from a different angle. The ocean kept finding him. Eventually, he stopped leaving.

He came to art late. Thirty years in design, gaming, and publishing, then at 49, he started making art. The work is built on a digital foundation, finished by hand with crystal glass pigments that shift with the light. The same surface reads differently depending on where you stand and what the light is doing.

He always meant to go to art school. This is what happened instead.
