We Shall We

Original digital-to-physical · Aluminum composite panel, UV ink, high-gloss automotive clear coat

$10,290

The palette arrives before you are ready for it. This work will shift from reading as bold to reading as warm to reading as something closer to urgent, as the sun drops and the palette on the wall begins to match the light outside. That convergence, when the painting and the room are running the same color temperature, is the version of this work that people tend to remember. It does not happen every day. When it does, the room is different.

From the studio

There is a specific moment at the end of the day when the sun drops fast and if there is someone else standing there with you, you do not need to say anything because you are both seeing the same thing and that is enough. 'We Shall We' is built from that moment: the togetherness that does not require words, and the question underneath it about what comes next.

Living with this work

The first thing you notice is the palette, which arrives before you are ready for it. After a week it settles into the room and you stop registering the color as bold and start registering it as presence. The figures become more interesting over time because they are simplified enough that your relationship to them shifts depending on what you bring to the room. Some mornings they are two strangers watching the same thing. Some evenings they are the same person twice.

Where it lives

Room by room: where this work thrives, where it struggles, and exactly where to hang it.

Room fit

This work is direct. It does not need to be discovered. It needs wall space and viewing distance. Three meters is better than one and a half. The palette is warm and saturated, which means it will advance on a neutral or cool wall and recede on a warm one. White or off-white gives it the most range. Natural light brings out the color depth; artificial warm light flattens the cooler register but intensifies the reds and yellows. Both readings are valid. Know which one your room will give it.

Strong fit

The warm palette reads well in morning light, which brings out the reds and yellows before the cooler register asserts itself later in the day. Position it on the wall you face waking rather than the wall behind the bed, so the viewing distance is natural. The figures work at this scale: close enough to read, far enough to not be specific.

vonMoerenburgh

The Hague, The Netherlands

48,000 miles. Panama to New Zealand, Brazil to Hawaii. vonMoerenburgh was crossing the Pacific, then crossing it again, from a different angle. The ocean kept finding him. Eventually, he stopped leaving.

He came to art late. Thirty years in design, gaming, and publishing, then at 49, he started making art. The work is built on a digital foundation, finished by hand with crystal glass pigments that shift with the light. The same surface reads differently depending on where you stand and what the light is doing.

He always meant to go to art school. This is what happened instead.
