Every other work in this collection holds a peak: a storm, a party, a departure, the twenty seconds before the sun drops. XVIII holds the default. Kijkduin on an late afternoon when the sun stayed pale yellow and the haze kept the sky from going hard. The horizon went pink. The sea went deep blue. The pale yellow did the rest. On Hahnemühle paper the crystal glass pigments hold that diffuse light at close range in a way the eye does not expect.

“Kijkduin. South of Scheveningen. The beach nobody goes to when they could go to Scheveningen. The sun was at that pale yellow phase, before it commits to orange. Not dramatic. The haze was doing something to the light that made the horizon go pink and warm without the sky going hard. The water was deep blue below all of it. This is what the North Sea looks like most of the time. Not the poster version. The actual version.”

Living with this work

The pale yellow register shifts most under different light conditions. In bright natural morning light it reads as cool and diffuse, the sun disc quiet against the pale sky. Under warm evening lamp light the amber advances and the work becomes warmer without ever becoming vivid. The crystal glass pigments are most visible at close range where they give the pale sun register a depth that the diffuse palette would not otherwise hold.

The pale palette is the quietest in the Suspended Moment series. It does not announce itself. Morning diffused natural light gives the fullest reading of the pale yellow register. 48,000 miles. Panama to New Zealand, Brazil to Hawaii. vonMoerenburgh was crossing the Pacific, then crossing it again, from a different angle. The ocean kept finding him. Eventually, he stopped leaving.

He came to art late. Thirty years in design, gaming, and publishing, then at 49, he started making art. The work is built on a digital foundation, finished by hand with crystal glass pigments that shift with the light. The same surface reads differently depending on where you stand and what the light is doing.

He always meant to go to art school. This is what happened instead.
