One figure. The Spanish coast at dusk. The Mediterranean on an evening when the water held the sky so completely that the horizon disappeared. The figure at the edge is the artist at an actual fork: stay in Spain for a new life, or go back to The Hague. III is the moment the decision was held in suspension. Between five and nine in the evening this work catches the light differently than it does at noon. Not dramatic. Specific. It is a quiet work and it asks for a quiet hour. Most days there is one.

From the studio

“An evening at Estepona, on the Spanish coast. I was there to work. The sea had other ideas. The water was completely flat and the sky was doing something specific with the pink and the blue: not transitioning, exactly, but holding both at once, suspended between them. Not quite travel, not quite home. I had to choose between staying for a new life there or going back to Holland. A figure standing at the edge, which was also me. The horizon had disappeared into the reflection.”

Living with this work

The work changes most noticeably in directional light. During the day it reads as a soft gradient with a quiet figure in it. As the light shifts toward evening, the pink register comes forward and the crystal glass pigments on the surface begin to catch differently: a shimmer that moves as you move past it. Collectors who pay attention to what they live with will notice it. Those who do not may not, at first.

Room fit

The soft blue-pink palette and the crystal glass pigments make this work responsive to natural and warm artificial light. The pigments catch differently depending on the angle of view and the angle of the light. Position at 145 cm to center on a neutral or white wall with at least two meters of clear viewing distance. The high-gloss surface picks up the ambient room: the wall behind the viewer becomes part of the composition. Avoid direct sunlight which will flatten the gradient over time.

Strong fit

The strongest domestic placement. The soft palette makes this a natural fit for a room used in the hours before sleep. Morning light gives a cooler reading; warm lamp light in the evening brings the pink forward and catches the crystal glass pigments. Position on a wall that receives indirect light.

48,000 miles. Panama to New Zealand, Brazil to Hawaii. vonMoerenburgh was crossing the Pacific, then crossing it again, from a different angle. The ocean kept finding him. Eventually, he stopped leaving.

He came to art late. Thirty years in design, gaming, and publishing, then at 49, he started making art. The work is built on a digital foundation, finished by hand with crystal glass pigments that shift with the light. The same surface reads differently depending on where you stand and what the light is doing.

He always meant to go to art school. This is what happened instead.
