Suspended Moment XII

Original digital-to-physical · Aluminium panel, UV ink, crystal glass pigments, high-gloss automotive clear coat

$3,300

After Moon is also from Koh Phangan: dawn on the east coast, the Full Moon Party finished, the figure in the water in the quiet. XII is the other end. West coast, sunset, the sky going hard orange over the Gulf of Thailand before the dark comes. Getting energy for the night. The crystal glass pigments hold the orange in the surface. In the evening it advances. The room gets the hour it was made from.

From the studio

Koh Phangan, west coast. The Gulf of Thailand at the hour before the Full Moon Party. The east coast beach fills up as the night approaches and the west coast is quiet: the sky going hard orange over the water, the navy below already holding the dark that is coming. Not the melancholy of a sunset. The energy of one. The sky using everything it has before the night takes over. XII is that hour.

Living with this work

XII is most itself in the hour before dinner when the room light shifts toward warm and the orange register advances from the surface. During the day the navy dominates and the work reads as a cool abstract horizon. As the evening arrives the orange comes forward and the crystal glass pigments give the sky register a quality of stored heat. The work does not wind down in the evening. It comes alive.

Where it lives

Room by room: where this work thrives, where it struggles, and exactly where to hang it.

Room fit

The charged orange and gold registers are the most active in the Suspended Moment series. Under warm lamp light in the evening the orange advances from the surface and the work comes forward in the room at the same hour it was made from. Position at 145 cm to center on a white or neutral wall with two to three meters of clear viewing distance. The deep navy holds the composition grounded. Morning light gives the cooler reading with the navy dominant and the orange quiet. This is an evening piece.

Strong fit

The charged evening palette makes this a strong bedroom piece for a room used at the end of the day. The orange register advances under warm lamp light and the work comes alive at the hour before sleep. Position at 145 cm to center on a white or neutral wall. Morning natural light gives the cooler reading with the navy dominant. The evening reading is the defining one.

vonMoerenburgh

The Hague, The Netherlands

48,000 miles. Panama to New Zealand, Brazil to Hawaii. vonMoerenburgh was crossing the Pacific, then crossing it again, from a different angle. The ocean kept finding him. Eventually, he stopped leaving.

He came to art late. Thirty years in design, gaming, and publishing, then at 49, he started making art. The work is built on a digital foundation, finished by hand with crystal glass pigments that shift with the light. The same surface reads differently depending on where you stand and what the light is doing.

He always meant to go to art school. This is what happened instead.
