RakeStreken
Yellow Bandit
Drawing inspiration from the emotional intensity of Francis Bacon and the expressive brushwork of Willem de Kooning, RakeStreken’s “Yellow Bandit” resonates with the raw, visceral quality found in their works. Echoes of Basquiat’s graffiti-like style and Edvard Munch’s exploration of psychological depth are also evident, creating a rich dialogue between past and present artistic expressions.

Using a combination of charcoal and oil paint, RakeStreken layered the canvas with dynamic brushstrokes and bold textures. The stark contrast between vivid yellows and dark tones sets a dramatic, melancholic mood. The charcoal’s dark, smudged lines symbolize the shadows of grief, while the bright yellow background represents the hope and renewal that gradually emerged from this darkness.
The title “Yellow Bandit” is loaded with meaning. The figure, shrouded in mystery, represents the artist’s confrontation with their own emotions. The intense eyes suggest a piercing insight, seeing through the facade of everyday life into the deeper truths of human experience.

The deliberate use of bright yellow set against dark tones carries profound symbolism. Yellow, commonly associated with light and hope, strikingly contrasts the surrounding darkness, symbolizing the delicate balance between despair and optimism. This interaction of colors poignantly reflects the artist’s journey, demonstrating an emotional transformation from grief to a state that is both meaningful and life-affirming.
The composition of “Yellow Bandit” is dominated by the upper half, where the intense eyes draw the viewer’s attention, creating an intentional yet unbalanced design that adds to the artwork’s emotional impact. The bold interplay of vivid yellows and dark tones sets a dramatic, melancholic mood, with accents of blue and red adding complexity. The dynamic brushwork and bold strokes contribute to the texture and depth, reflecting the artist’s raw emotional expression. RakeStreken’s unique expressionist style showcases raw emotional content, creating a powerful visual narrative that captured my imagination.

RakeStreken is a collaboration between Sanne Knoester and Paul Boswijk. In 2012, they began making weekly drawings together. These drawings evolved into paintings, which grew larger and more abstract as they continually experimented with new ideas and directions. One night, while reflecting on a painting, the name RakeStreken was born. For them, it perfectly encapsulated the search for “the right stroke” that defines a painting.
By 2016, they had developed a deep passion for calligraphy, which now significantly influences their work on paper, canvas, and walls. Interestingly, the name RakeStreken took on even more meaning, highlighting the precision of the few brushstrokes that form each letter.
