The stark contrast between the bold reds and the subdued whites and grays in the background symbolizes the balance between intense emotions and calm introspection. This interplay of colors and contrasts mirrors the artist’s journey of rediscovery and the harmonious balance they found in their life through reconnection with a dear friend.
“Red Ant” draws on the expressive intensity found in the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat, with its raw brushwork and bold use of color. There are aggressive brushstrokes and dynamic composition and emotional depth and distorted figure bear similarities to Francis Bacon’s exploration of the human psyche. Additionally, the free-spirited lines resonate with Cy Twombly’s calligraphic style.
The composition is marked by its asymmetrical balance, drawing the viewer’s attention to the contrasting areas of bold reds and subdued whites and grays. The use of color is particularly striking, with red dominating the piece, providing a sense of passion or distress, while the whites and grays offer a stark contrast, adding to the emotional dissonance. The brushwork is expressive and loose, with visible strokes that give the piece a dynamic texture and sense of movement. The artwork demonstrates a creative approach to portraiture, with an abstract and emotive rendition that challenges traditional representation.

RakeStreken is a collaboration between Sanne Knoester and Paul Boswijk. In 2012, they began making weekly drawings together. These drawings evolved into paintings, which grew larger and more abstract as they continually experimented with new ideas and directions. One night, while reflecting on a painting, the name RakeStreken was born. For them, it perfectly encapsulated the search for “the right stroke” that defines a painting.
By 2016, they had developed a deep passion for calligraphy, which now significantly influences their work on paper, canvas, and walls. Interestingly, the name RakeStreken took on even more meaning, highlighting the precision of the few brushstrokes that form each letter.
